Year of Creative Habits // Week 1

Happy New Year!

About a week before the new year I decided that, even though I have a terrible track record with challenges and projects, I would take part in Year of Creative Habits. I first learned about it through Haley Aubuchon, who says it’s one of the best art things she’s ever done – and it shows in how she improved over the year she did it. I then had a think about how I could do it in a manageable way. During Art Every Day Month 2016, I did a couple of drawings on post-its and thought it was fun. They are small and easy to make something on every day, I could even doodle during my lunch break or commute. We also have hundreds of post-its at home, so it seemed a perfect way to go about it: a post-it (or two) a day!

I decided to do some test runs in the lead up to the new year, because I wanted to get a feel for it and I thought it would be less intimidating than having to start right on January 1st. I also made a little book to house them. Here are some of the testers:

Initially I thought I would just be drawing on each post-it, but it’s really fun to collage on them too. I think it will be good to mix it up throughout the year so I don’t get bored or frustrated. Yesterday I completed the first week and I’ve made art on two post-its a day (except on the first day). I’m not sure how long that will last, but I’m having fun with it right now! Here are the post-its for the week:

It’s making me feel more accomplished every day and I look forward to making them. Are you taking part in a 365 day project of some kind? I’d love to hear about it!

I’m planning on making a series of small art journals/zines this year–different sizes and themes for each. I might have to steal your idea of using post-it notes for one of my books! I love your “no longer apologetic for my femininity” collage!

That’s really cool – and steal away! I’d love to see how it turns out if you decide to do that 🙂 thank you for the kind words too.

I’ve been thinking about making a zine this year. I dabbled in zines years ago but that was before I discovered art journaling. I feel like I would be better at them now!
